Oct 22, 2026: Record El Niño Warning, Typhoon Champi and Nigeria's First Ebola Case

The UN warns the current El Niño could be the strongest on record, with up to 50 million people facing more hunger, as violent Typhoon Champi bears down on Taiwan and Japan's southern Okinawa islands. In South Africa, more than 400 people, mostly children, fell ill from contaminated tap water in Bronkhorstspruit. In Afghanistan, the UN expects more than 19 million people to face acute hunger this winter as nutrition sites close for lack of funding. Gordon Brown says more than 500 million children need an education, and Education Cannot Wait commits $3 million to get injured and orphaned children in Gaza and the West Bank back to learning. And Nigeria confirms its first case of Ebola in the current outbreak, which began in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
